A real “weekend break in the country” … in Nairobi!

Last weekend we were lucky enough to be invited for lunch at Emakoko, the brand new lodge owned by Anton and Emma Childs on the Nairobi National Park boundary.

Packing up our three kids we decided to make a day of it and set off bright and early and full of excitement into the park. As always, within five minutes of getting there we were asking ourselves why we don’t go in more often! Herds of buffalo, Impala and Eland greeted us and there were surprisingly few other vehicles.

We had a wonderful morning cruising around spotting numerous Giraffe, Zebra and as many Ostrich as I have ever seen in one place. The bird life around the water holes was beautiful and then of course there were the Rhino. Those magnificent and terribly endangered beasts right on our doorstep. How lucky are we and how much do we take that for granted?

As the sun got hotter however, the kids’ attention span grew shorter so off we set to Emakoko. What a lovely site it was with the glittering swimming pool and beautiful rooms set up on the side of the gorge. We were greeted by very friendly staff all offering to take the kids and baskets of swimming gear for us, given cool face cloths and delicious fruit juice, then ushered into the lounge and bar as the kids threw themselves in the pool.

Then lunch. Delicious! Thai bites and shot glasses of Gaszpacho layered with yoghurt to start.  Followed by tempura battered fish and chips and a feta cheese & seed salad and finished off with home-made cinnamon ice-cream. What a treat!

We then had a tour of the rooms which can only be described as stunning. Open plan with modern but very appropriate furnishings and each room with its own balcony to show off the magnificent views.

We left at about 4 o’clock and were home before 5. An unbelievable oasis so close to home and one that I simply cannot recommend enough.
