Hemingways Collection unveiled their latest property, a 45 bed-roomed boutique hotel in Karen, and I had the pleasure of being invited to have a look around this morning.  The first thing that struck me was just how clever they have been.. and I mean that sincerely!  Hemingways Collection has cherry picked three destinations in Kenya that never fail to impress. Watamu, Masai Mara and now leafy Karen. As a visitor to Kenya, I can’t think of a better tour.  All properties are niche, with a leaning towards the customer looking for a small, luxurious and personalised service; which they really understand.   Their properties aren’t cheap, but by no means the most expensive places to stay either; but what they’re selling you is value for money.

Hemingways have been careful to select what I think are an experienced and talented management team, all with one aim: to establish the benchmark for customer service in this country. Through innovative ideas – guest butlers in Hemingways Karen, intensive training for Kenyan employees (which will even encompass placements in hotels out of the country) and consistent core values throughout the collection of properties – I think Hemingways stand to lead the crowd; for all to follow.   Let’s be honest, who doesn’t like being greeted by name on arrival?!

Never mind the tourists.. what’s in it for us I hear you say?  Unless you have been asleep for the last couple of years, you can’t have failed to notice the burgeoning middle class growing in Kenya.  We have become accomplished foodies, demanding bright bold new places to spend our salaries! We expect gourmet dishes, great presentation and fresh local ingredients. Hemingways Nairobi have made a large investment in this area, in the form of Barry Tonks, who gained a  wealth of experience  in London, working for some of the finest hotels.  Barry has bundles of enthusiasm for Kenya’s produce and isn’t shy to show it off. Over the last year whilst the hotel was being build, Barry has had the benefit of time  developing relationships with Farmers all over the country, identifying and selecting only the finest ingredients. Infact, they have even gone as far as to sponsor what they consider to be a special breed of cattle for their beef, at a farm in Naivasha.  In his words, “if we don’t make it, we won’t serve it”.    We will have the opportunity to try his foods in either the Brasserie or the Fine Dining Room.  Barry will tempt us in with tastings and regularly changed menus (much overlooked in this country!) in beautiful settings.

This leads me onto birthday parties, private meetings, conferences or simply a new venue to impress clients! All of which I think will be taken care of in the only way Hemingways know how.. with attention to detail.

Oh.. did I mention the Spa? The Spa opens in June, and we have been promised a Spa that will raise the bar in this country!

If you don’t believe me, then what are you waiting for; go and see for yourself!
