Beware of Identity Theft Credit Card Use in Kenya

Identity theft is a huge problem all over the globe. Please note the following when you use your credit card at restaurants and other establishments in Kenya:

1. Always have the credit card machine brought to your table. Do not hand your credit card to the waiter to take away. This allows time for the waiter to copy your details, or make an imprint of your card.

2. The credit card machine produces two slips of paper. One for you to sign and give to the vendor and one for you to keep for your records. If you notice carefully, the copy that the restaurant keeps usually has your full credit card details on it. Do not let the restaurant keep this copy. If you insist, they will accept the other copy with only the last 4 digits of your credit card number on it. As long as they have your signature it doesn’t matter. There is no reason for the restaurant to have a hard copy of your complete credit card details.

Kenya is the only place that I know of that uses this system. We need to bring this awareness to all business establishments and get them to realize that this is not an acceptable practice.
