Restaurant Review: Purdy Arms, Marula Lane, Karen

Purdy Arms is the recently refurbished & opened restaurant, bar, private rooms, exhibition space and potting shed (little garden centre) situated on 50 acres of land on Marula Lane. Set in the building previously known as Nairobi Place (drug & alcohol rehabilitation centre), the bar is affectionately, and politically incorrectly, already known as “The Rehab”.

With massive, beautiful grounds, a very pretty terrace overlooking a forested view, a large bar with two big screens for screening sport, private function rooms, exhibition space, and 4 rooms to rent out on a B&B basis, Purdy Arms can’t not be successful. Also, it fills a huge gap in the “lunch in a lovely garden setting accompanied by some sport for the husbands”, left behind when the Rusty Nail closed earlier in the year.

The Word of Mouth team had lunch recently. We feel that there are a few teething problems, and some of the food was a lot better than the rest, but with a bit of training, attention to detail and consistency, It will be good. The Lamu fish soup starter was absolutely delicious, whereas the chicken lollipops were quite heavy and greasy. The Chicken Tikka salad again was very good, nicely presented with generous amounts of curry spiced dressing. Of the main courses, the Guinness and Beef pie got husband’s approval, the scampi and chips were just ok, but the Prawns Piri Piri were superb, lots of king size prawns with a fiery, delicious sauce. We did not try the samosas, but heard that they were somewhat hit or miss.

The wine list is our real bug bear! The house wine is Arniston Bay, the rose of which is fine, we didn’t try the red, but the white we were told is a Chardonnay, which does not appeal to all. The only other options are Beach House white, and something horrendously expensive that we didn’t go anywhere near.

The waiters also need a bit more training as they were generally clueless as to what the dishes on the menu contained, what the wine brands were, and the rest…!! Having said that, they are incredibly friendly, polite and smiley!

All in all, we definitely recommend Purdy Arms for a lunch out on a nice day, or a bit of a party in the nicely decorated bar! The private function facility is very good too.
