Weekend Getaway through the eyes of a reader!

Recently, in need of a weekend getaway, my friends and I drove three hours from Nairobi to the Ol Pejeta Conservancy a 90,000-acre private park and the biggest black rhino sanctuary in East Africa. We booked ourselves into the self-catering Pelican house which is situated right next to a dam and offers the most magnificent views of the hippo in the dam.

On our way to the house from the gate we came across elephant, buffalo, giraffe, zebra and many antelope species. We also saw a lion resting under a tree – all this before we even begun a game drive!  The staff at Pelican house were all very delightful and welcomed us with freshly squeezed glasses of juice, guzzled in seconds by the kids!

The next morning we started with an early game drive and luckily came across a hunting cheetah. The cheetah was stalking his prey, a gazelle, by hiding in the bushes, biding his time moving closer and closer to it. Though the hunt was unsuccessful it was the highlight of my stay at the Conservancy.

Next we got a chance to feed and pet a tame black rhino called Baraka. He was moved into a special enclosure when he became blind and couldn’t survive in the wild on his own. I was informed that nearby there were four very special rhinos called northern whites. They are special because there are only seven of them in the entire world. We didn’t have time to go see them but I promised to go back to Ol Pejeta if only to see these special rhinos up close.

Our last stop was the Sweetwaters Chimpanzee Sanctuary – the only place in Kenya where you can see chimpanzees as they are not indigenous to the country. I learnt that they are totally different from monkeys and are actually more like humans!  They are very interesting to watch and we were all amazed at their intelligence.

I would recommend the Ol Pejeta Conservancy to anyone looking for a safari experience close to Nairobi and Pelican house for all those interested in a nice serene weekend getaway.
